SEVEN AGES: A COMMUNITY DESIGNED LOBBY DISPLAY
Great Lakes Theater Festival recently asked student and resident artists of TrueNorth Cultural Arts Center in Avon Lake to share original artwork inspired by or reflective of Shakespeare’s famous “Seven Ages of Man” speech from As You Like It. Eight judges selected ten pieces for this exhibit, which was on permanent display in the lobby of the Ohio Theatre throughout the Festival’s fall repertory, from September 16 – October 22, 2005.
Drawing by Bay High’s Jim Samilson, (no title), reflecting Shakespeare's Seventh and final age: “ Last scene of all, That ends this strange eventful history, Is second childishness and mere oblivion, Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans every thing.” |
Avon Lake artist Jay Miller's black and white piece, "Paula and the Boys," reflective of multiple ages of man: "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages."
Bay Village artist Christine England's piece, "Gentleman," reflective of Shakespeare's Sixth Age: "The sixth age shifts Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon, With spectacles on nose and pouch on side, His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes And whistles in his sound."

Other winning artists include: Susan Schauer, Carol Brown, and students Audra Kizina ((Brookside High), Demitrus Burks (North Ridgeville High), and Jim Samilson (Bay High).
