A FREE Outreach Touring Production
Written and Directed by: Daniel Hahn
What happened on Shakespeare’s charmed island before Prospero summoned forth The Tempest? In this imagined prequel to Shakespeare’s masterpiece, we see if Princess Miranda and the sprightly Ariel can transform a monstrous Caliban from beastly creature into redeemed hero, with the aid of Shakespearean scenes magically springing to life from Prospero’s enchanted book. Does art truly hold the power to transform? Before The Storm is designed for audiences of all background and ages. This Surround event is free and open to the public at all non-school venues.

VIRTUE IS BOLD: A STUDENT DESIGNED LOBBY EXHIBIT
October, 5-21, 2007 Ohio Theatre Lobby
Playhouse Square Center
In March 2007, Great Lakes Theater Festival provided a three-hour
student workshop for art students enrolled at the Firelands Association
for the Visual Arts (FAVA) in Oberlin. This workshop provided an
in-depth exploration of William Shakespeare’s Measure
for Measure
utilizing improvisation, theater exercises and actual scenes from the
play. At the conclusion of the workshop, students were asked to read
Measure for Measure and spend the coming months creating an original
piece of artwork inspired by something in the play that personally moved
them. Seven months later, we proudly display the grand prize winning
portrait, composed by Wellington High School eleventh grade artist
Abigail Conklin. Special thanks to Lorain County’s Gifted Program
Coordinator Mary Ellen Carras for her coordination of and dedication to
this project.

Measure for Measure: My Version
After Daniel Hahn’s student workshop, when I thought about what I could
make as a piece of art representative of Measure for Measure, so many
characters, thoughts and ideas flashed through my mind in instant
pieces… so many bits of art that could be potentially beautiful, but
one subject that connected most with me was Juliet. Although she did
not have a very big role in the play, her character and struggle sparked
enough emotion in me to create this portrait. The piece of art is
virtually identical to what I saw in my head, and I was very pleased
with it: the downward angle, her soft eyelashes, her quiet smile, and,
of course, her lace-wrapped hands resting contentedly on her swollen
belly. Her love for her unborn child, taboo as it was, was not atypical
in the least, but for some reason, it struck me as poetic and worthy of
depiction.
